Panel Discussion: How Women Can Make Themselves Visible for Board Appointments

Dr Rosanne Hawarden (DBA, MA (Wits), B Soc. Sc. (Nursing) (Kwa-Zulu-Natal) recently completed a Doctorate in Business and Administration, Massey University, New Zealand on the networks of women directors. She is co-founder and South Island Chairperson of Women on Boards New Zealand Inc. She is a director of a company which has represented in New Zealand the Johannesburg based international accounting (ERP) software house, Syspro. Rosanne serves on the boards of several not-for-profit organizations. In 2011 she won the Sage Award for best paper from a dissertation at the USA Academy of Management and has contributed chapters to two books on women’s career advancement. Her interest in ancient Indo-Pacific trade networks has led to skills in maritime archaeology. Dr Rosanne Hawarden and Lesley Whyte (MBA) co-founded Women on Boards New Zealand to promote greater gender diversity at the C-suite and board level, along with being the only national organisation in New Zealand dedicated to preparing and empowering the next generation of board ready women.

Joy Pitts is the Managing Director of Peoplemax. Joy is an executive/leadership Coach and an Organisational Psychologist with extensive business experience spanning several continents and countries. Joy has extensive experience coaching managers and leaders across a wide range of sectors and organisations. Her approach is solution focused and she gets results - often transformational behaviour change. Joy has worked for leading global companies including IBM, AT&T and Novell. Joy has significant background experience at the senior executive level, and has a track record of establishing and growing businesses in the Asia Pacific region and developing high performing teams to support this growth. She has been involved in mergers, acquisitions and other significant change situations. Joy has significant cross cultural experience gained from working closely with teams from numerous Asian countries over a 10 year period. This includes India, China, Japan and Korea. Joy has also worked as a Consultant Organisational Psychologist in Career Management, Outplacement, Talent Assessment, Recruitment and as an Executive and Leadership Coach in the Corporate arena. Joy Pitts’ professional training includes a Psychology Honours Degree and a Certificate in Change Management from UTS. Joy is a Registered Psychologist.

Michael Judin

Preparing and Making Ourselves Visible for Board Opportunities

Mr Michael Judin is a Senior Partner at Goldman Judin Maisels Inc. Michael Judin obtained his law degree at the University of the Witwatersrand and commenced practice in Johannesburg at the end of 1969. He has delivered a considerable number of lectures, nationally and internationally, on various topics in regard to the new Companies Act, King III and Social Media/Network issues in regard to the Governance side thereof. Michael is currently the senior partner of the Johannesburg based law firm, Goldman Judin Inc. which has received: The winner of the Corporate International Magazine practice award for “Best Law Firm in South Africa for Dispute Resolution Legal Work 2009”; The Award as the Winner of the Corporate Intl Magazine Global Award “Boutique Law Firm of the Year in South Africa for 2010”; The Dealmakers Global Award 2011; The Dealmakers Country Awards 2011.

Michael was a Member of the Main Committee which wrote King III, South Africa’s new Corporate Governance Report and Code. Michael was also the convenor of the Sub-Committee which wrote the Chapter dealing with negotiation, mediation and arbitration as contained in King III. Michael was nominated by his peers as one of the world’s leading practitioners in the field of Corporate Governance Lawyers 2010 in the International Who’s Who of Corporate Governance Lawyers 2010.

Michael is a director of, and legal advisor to, the American Chamber of Commerce in South Africa (“AmCham”). On November 22, 2006, Michael was inducted as an Honorary Life Member of AmCham in recognition of exemplary leadership and dedicated service. He is the author of several published articles, nationally and internationally. Judin is the Chairman of PrimeServ Group Limited, and a non-executive director of Set Point Group (Pty) Ltd and Nu-World Holding. He is a director of several private companies and acts as trustee to several trusts; is admitted as an attorney in Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland and has right of appearance in the High Court of South Africa. Michael is a member of the International Bar Association and an associate member of the American Bar Association, is a member of the e-Commerce Advisory Committee of the Financial Services Board of the Republic of South Africa and acts as honorary attorney to several welfare organisations.

He is a commissioner of the Small Claims Court, a director of Hospice Association of the Witwatersrand, is an Honorary Member of the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa, is a lecturer on the AltX Director’s Induction Programme, is a member of the Committee which wrote the Code for Responsible Investing in South Africa (CRISA), an Honorary Patron of CGF Research Institute (Pty) Ltd, a Patron of WESSA (The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) and a non-Executive Director of the National Council against Smoking NPC. Michael was invited to an exclusive anti-corruption workshop for legal professionals designed by the International Bar Association in collaboration with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

He was the Winner of the International Law Office Client Choice 2012 Award in the category: General Corporate, South Africa.
